English for IT

English for IT is a complete course and certification exam that will prepare students to work in the English language field of IT. The course begins at a lower-intermediate level and takes the student to an upper-intermediate level, which is the lowest language level a person can expect to be able to work in effectively.

The English for IT course and certification exam have been designed specifically to prepare students for the world of work.

It is aimed at the following non-native English speaking target audiences:

  • late-stage K12 and Higher Education students and IT professionals early in their careers;
  • software developers, network engineers, security engineers, product managers and IT support who want to work in an international, multicultural environment;
  • IT specialists who want to start working in multinational or English-speaking companies;
  • non-IT employees working in the IT sector.

Do you want to work as a software developer or a network or security engineer in English?

The English for IT course and certification exam will prepare you for working in an international environment and will help you to understand IT-related words and phrases. The English for IT B2 / GSE 59-76 certification exam shows potential employers that you are able to read, listen and understand grammar at an upper-intermediate level, and that you are already familiar with many of the terms and concepts associated with the world of professional IT.

Do you want to work with IT professionals, but you are not an IT professional yourself?

If you do not directly work in IT as a software developer, product manager, network or security engineer, or a customer support or IT specialist, you still need to work with these people. You need to understand what a network engineer says to you when you have a problem with your network, and you need to understand what a customer support representative is saying to you when you have a problem with your computer. English for IT is not only for IT professionals, but for everybody who works in the modern world and works with technology.

How did English for IT begin?

English for IT began as a joint project venture between OpenEDG and Certiport, a Pearson VUE business. Having collaborated on many projects in the past, they wished to strengthen their ties, and were looking for ways to better serve the customers they already had.

They realized that while all of their customers wanted to develop their careers in the field of IT, the vast majority of them were not native English speakers, and struggled with the English vocabulary and terminology that so much of IT employs.

With this understanding, they set about devising a course that would help their customers fill this gap in their knowledge and skills, and a certification exam that would allow them to prove to potential employers and educational establishments that they did indeed possess these language traits.

With their focus on job-ready skills, Certiport was keen to begin at the level that would allow successful test candidates to jump right into the workforce and begin working in IT in an English-speaking environment. Thus was born English for IT B2 / GSE 59-75, a certification exam that tests reading, listening, and grammar skills to an intermediate level.

While we are very proud of the intermediate-level English for IT courses and certification exam, we understand that this level is simply too high for many beginner learners, and with the intermediate level of English for IT successfully established in the marketplace, work has begun in earnest on creating a lower-level course.
